38 - Richard
Richard is 35 years old psychologist from Norway, who plays guitar as his daily part of psycho-hygiene after working with patients.
Got the idea to try out the guitar at the age of 15 after listening Nirvanas In Utero and specially song Heart Shaped box. So soon after that he purchased Behringer Strat with a small 8w combo.
He remember later purchasing Boss DS-1 (of course) and Marshall jackhammer (fck yeah!) after he got more into metal on high school (jackhammer almost blew up speaker on the poor Behringer amp).
Learned to play from different courses and friends. Later on high school he started to listen variety of different genres: Alt Rock, Post-Rock, Indie, Shoegaze, but also jazz and a lot of electronic music (Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin) . Didn’t play guitar much during studying at university but started again in late 20s and now he’s glad he came back to music. Sometimes record some ideas just for fun and enjoying experimenting with different pedals and sounds.
Richard’s guitars:
G & L Tribute Doheny
First guitar after I started to play again. “Loud and fat” sounding pickups and the great thing about electronic is the passive treble bass circuit, which I use a lot with different fuzz sounds.
Fender vintera 60s jazzmaster
After playing some time on Doheny I wanted to try Fender jazzmaster, and I really enjoyed the sound of vintera. Again enjoying pickups and using rhythm circuit a lot with a fuzz pedals.
Fender vintera 60s Stratocaster
Few years later I started to learn some Frusciantes licks and of course I realised I need a strat! I found this on a great deal and found out that its also perfect match for my vintera jazzmaster. Great sounding strat wit a bit of “warmer” sound.
FANO PX6
I always wanted some good sounding humbucker guitar but didn’t like any Fener /Gibson ones I tried. Fano was the great “between” and clean sound of Lollar Imperials convinced me with balanced and clean sound.
Fender Custom Shop 60s telecaster NOS
I once had a Mexican tele on a high school, and remember I enjoyed it a lot. I always loved the sound of a tele so decided to build myself “one guitar to rule them all” . It is the most expensive guitar I own, but I don’t regret buying it . This one has has all vintage 60s specs and 63 pickups in it. It’s very comfortable to play for me and I just love the clean sound of it together with Deluxe reverb. Also as you can see, I already had “look preference” at the time I was building this one.
Fender American Vintage II Jazz Bass
Last few years I really wanted to start to learn a bass and I found this one as B-stock for a great price. The neck is great and for me as guitar player was a quite familiar neck profile so I learned a many bass songs after a short period of time. I am especially proud of learning nice grooves from Radioheads Colin Greenwood. I don’t own any Bass amp, but I am playing it through my Blues Cube – Pedalboard - AKG Headphones.
Gibson J-45 Studio Rosewood
My first acoustic was a Fender CD (Which I still own and its in my parents house). So after years I decided finally to buy one I can use more often. I decided to go for rosewood J-45 studio- Its not the typical J-45, but I really enjoy the sweet lows and crisp highs of rosewood. This one has also a bit slimmer body (Martin ish) so I can playing for a long time.
Richard’s amps and pedals:
Roland Blues Cube Hot
Fender Tone Master Blonde Deluxe Reverb
I don’t play any gigs, so clean sound, attenuation and how they take pedals is the most important for me. Currently I own 2 amps. And I am really enjoying playing both of them
JHS Double Barrel
1981 DRV
Chase Bliss Automatone
For me the biggest fun is combining all this pedals. I have 30 saved presents on automatone(I don’t remember why I saved half of them, but they all sound great)
Walrus SLÖ
Earthquaker Levitation V2
Both great ambient reverbs, using it when creating some lush sound, or some shoegazy heavier sound
OBNE Black fountain
Earthquaker Space spiral v2.
JHS Lucky cat
Three very different delays, using Lucky cat for more “standard” delay sound and the rest for the more lo-fi darker repeats, both are great doing that.
Earthquaker Night wire v2
Walrus Julian V2
Love the chorus sound of Julia and versatility of Night wire, both are great for different sound moments.
What was your first guitar and do you still have it?
The first guitar that I owned was Behringer strat, I think I later borrowed to someone and never got it back (typical)
What’s your favorite guitar right now and why?
Fender CS Telecaster. Because tele…Seriously it’s the greatest sounding guitar I have, and it has “Everyting”.
What’s your newest purchase?
J-45 acoustic. Really enjoying just sitting on a couch with it.
How often do you play?
Every day. I try to play at least 1 hour, now combining guitar with a bass.
